The short answer

In English, zero contact is the natural order: the number comes before the noun, as in “zero tolerance” or “zero waste”. The most common English name is actually no contact, or “the no contact rule”. “Contact zero” mostly appears as a translation from languages where the number comes after the noun.

Why “contact zero” exists

In Spanish, French and Portuguese, the usual order puts the number after the noun: contacto cero, contact zéro, contato zero. Translated word for word, that becomes “contact zero”. People who learned the idea in another language, or who search in a mix of languages, often type it that way.

  • English: no contact, zero contact, the no contact rule
  • Spanish: contacto cero, la regla del contacto cero
  • French: contact zéro, or simply “no contact”
  • German: Kontaktsperre, or “No Contact”
  • Portuguese: contato zero, a regra do contato zero

Do “zero contact” and “no contact” mean the same thing?

Yes. Both mean no direct or indirect contact with an ex for a period of time. Some people use “zero contact” to stress that there are no exceptions at all (no likes, no profile checks), and “low contact” for the version with limited, practical communication. The full definition is in zero contact explained.
